Environmental management

The environmental management system includes all employees and departments who are responsible for improving the company's environmental protection. This also comprises all environmental planning and organizational activities and applied processes and methods to develop, implement, maintain and evaluate the company's environmental policies.

In order to consistently achieve our objectives for environmental protection, we have created an organization with clearly defined areas of responsibility and a systematic management system according to the ISO 14001 international standard for continuous improvement processes.

Currently OSRAM has 48 of 52 plants that are certified according to the ISO 14001 international standard for environmental management.

Environmental management according to ISO 14001

This standard covers a company's environmental policies in a broader sense. Since 1996, the DIN EN ISO 14001 standard has served as the basis for creating environment management systems. This internationally recognized standard aims to continually improve environmental protection measures throughout the industry.

A company can obtain ISO 14001 certification by

  • Pursuing concrete environmental policies, including the establishment of environmental guidelines
  • Conducting regular environmental analyses aimed at establishing new environmental objectives and environmental programs to meet changing needs
  • Defining and documenting the allocation of funds for environmental protection
  • Conducting regular internal environmental management checks
  • Conducting regular evaluations of its environmental management and making changes where needed

OSRAM has created the necessary organization for this industry standard with clearly defined areas of responsibility and a comprehensive system of environmental management.

Responsibility

Overall responsibility for environmental protection at OSRAM lies clearly with company management and is supervised by the head of the Technology Division. Under his direction, the department for environmental protection and technical safety handles company-wide coordination and continued development. At individual plants, managers and their department heads are responsible for practical implementation. The plants receive support and advice from environmental experts who are authorities on water, waste disposal and air pollution control.

OSRAM also actively works to dispose of electrical and electronic equipment in accordance with EU WEEE guidelines.

Internal monitoring

Our technicians regularly monitor the management system to ensure that it complies with OSRAM environmental standards. The results of each assessment are checked and analyzed by an environmental protection auditing team consisting of employees from each department of the plants under inspection. OSRAM uses this internal monitoring to ensure that all relevant legal environmental standards are respected and to explore innovative ways of improving environmental protection at OSRAM.
